Updated: First 'PS5 Pro Enhanced' games revealed: What to expect

11 Sep 2024 | Rasmus Larsen |

Some of the biggest console games can now run at 4K 60fps on PS5 Pro, while others are inching closer to 120fps. There are even examples of games running in 8K.
Update 25.09.2024: Sony has confirmed 10 additional games enhanced for PS5 Pro. The list in the table at the bottom has been updated. The additional games are Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered, Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, Rise of the Ronin, Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil Village, Stellar Blade and Dragon Age: The Veilguard. PlayStation 5 Pro was announced yesterday. The new, more powerful console features a Game Boost feature that can enhance graphics, frame rates or resolution, depending on how the game was designed, according to Sony. This applies to over 8500 titles. However, to fully take advantage of PS5 Pro, games must be optimized by the developers. These games will carry a 'PS5 Pro Enhanced' label, making them easier for users to identify in the PlayStation store.

Gaming at 60fps

Earlier this year, rumors suggested that optimized games must run at a minimum of 60fps on PS5 Pro. Sony did not explicitly confirm this, but it was still the underlying message during the presentation, where several games that currently run at 30fps were showcased at 60fps. Horizon Forbidden West will, for example, run at 4K 60fps, and The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered will run at 60fps (4K not confirmed). Marvel's Spider-Man 2 will have more details at 60fps. Sony claimed that PS5 Pro will "double the power" versus PS5 in titles such as The Last of Us and Ratchet and Clank.

Improved ray-tracing

Another focus area with PS5 Pro is improved ray-tracing, offering more realistic lighting effects, reflections and shadows. For ray tracing, the PS5 Pro has 2-3 times the power of the PS5, according to Sony. Gran Turismo 7 will get updated with enhanced ray-tracing while running at 60fps – but that is not all. - "It's humbling to see how game creators have embraced the latest technology from PS5 Pro, and several games will be patched with free software updates for gamers to take advantage of PS5 Pro's features. These games can be identified with a PS5 Pro Enhanced label within their title," said Hideaki Nishino, CEO of Platform Business Group, Sony Interactive Entertainment.

Gaming in 8K

In addition to games running up to 4K 120fps, the PS5 Pro will also support 8K resolution, according to Sony. We have, of course, heard this story before, as 8K support was also promised for the original PS5. That update never arrived and Sony has since removed the 8K logo from the box. This time, however, it seems like 8K will actually materialize – whether this will impact the original PS5 remains to be seen. In a hands-on with the PS5 Pro, CNET got to play Gran Turismo 7, which is being updated with graphic modes for either 120fps or 8K. It seems the game will in fact have 3 graphic modes, as there is also the one with ray-tracing at 60fps. It is currently unclear if 8K will be limited to 30 or 60fps on PS5 Pro. This will also depend on the HDMI 2.1 implementation. Also read: List: 4K TVs and 8K TVs with HDMI 2.1

40-50 enhanced games

Sony expects around 40-50 games to be ready as 'PS5 Pro Enhanced' in time for the PS5 Pro launch on November 7. There will be no games exclusive to PS5 Pro. This is roughly the same number of games available when PS4 Pro launched back in 2016. In the years that followed, both old and new games were optimized as developers became more familiar with the new tools. Not all of the 40-50 games have been named, but the following have been confirmed. They include titles from Sony's in-house studios and partner studios. Is it enough to justify the $700 / £700 / €800 price tag?
