LG Display's new stretchable display can also be folded and twisted, with concepts showcased during Seoul Fashion Week.
In 2022, display maker LG Display unveiled the world's first high-resolution stretchable display prototype, backed by funding from the Korean government. The displays have 20% stretchability, a 100ppi resolution (similar to a regular monitor) and full RGB color.
It is a micro-LED display – not OLED – made from special silicon similar to that used in contact lenses, giving it a rubberband-like structure. The pixel pitch is less than 40μm.
Displays in clothes?
LG Display is now exploring applications for its new type of micro-LED display, eyeing the fashion, wearables, mobility and gaming markets. The company said the display can attach to curved surfaces, such as skin, clothing, furniture, automobiles and aircraft.
At the 2025 S/S Seoul Fashion Week, it teamed up with Korean designers Youn-Hee Park and Chung-Chung Lee to explore how stretchable displays can be incorporated into clothes and bags.
