LG Display continues to research micro-LED technology and its latest prototype is a stretchable display that can expand up to 50% – an industry first.
The display maker introduced its first high-resolution stretchable micro-LED display in 2022, featuring 20% stretchability, 100 ppi (pixels per inch) and full RGB color.

The new prototype is still 12 inches in size but can now expand to 18 inches when stretched, while retaining the same pixel density and color capabilities as the previous prototype.
- "Stretchable displays are seen as the ultimate free-form screen technology because they can be freely transformed into any shape, including by stretching, folding, and twisting," said LG Display.
durable for over 10,000 stretches
LG Display explained that the display uses 40μm (micrometer) micro-LEDs, the new technology that could compete with OLED in the future.
- "The new prototype’s strengthened durability means it can be repeatedly stretched over 10,000 times, maintaining clear image quality even in extreme environments such as exposure to low or high temperatures and external shocks," said LG Display.
The development of stretchable displays is part of a national project funded by South Korea's Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, with an initial goal for displays to reach 20% expandability.
LG Display recently said that envisions stretchable display can be used in clothing. Another potential application is the automotive industry, as shown here:
