After foldable smartphones, one of the next steps is expandable laptop screens, made possible by rollable OLED. The first panel goes into mass production in April.
The idea has been captivating people for a decade or more: A compact device that can expand when needed by the user.
Foldable smartphones are already on the market, but they are still evolving to find their ideal form. Similar efforts have been made in the TV space, such as LG's now-discontinued rollable OLED TV.
Expandable laptop screens
In April 2025, Samsung Display will begin mass production of the world's first rollable OLED panel designed for laptops, the company confirmed at CES 2025.
The screen can expand by almost 50%. When retracted, it offers a 14-inch display with a 5:4 aspect ratio (2000x1600 pixels). In extended form, it transforms into a 16.7-inch display with an 8:9 aspect ratio (2000x2350 pixels). The panel itself actually measures slightly over 18 inches, but par of it remain hidden beneath the keyboard.

Lenovo will launch the first one
Lenovo's ThinkBook Plus G6 Rollable will be the first laptop to use the panel, with a global launch planned for June.
Samsung Display also highlighted that, in addition to being rollable, the panel incorporates its Eco² OLED structure. This enables a 30% reduction in power consumption plus an even thinner panel. The panel delivers 400 nits, 120Hz and 100% DCI-P3 color.
- "As the rollable display extends, it may experience stress, but based on our foldable mass-production experience, we have designed to ensure durability in our rollable products," said Youngseok Kim, VP and Head of Samsung Display IT Sales. "The rollable display will bring innovation to IT devices, especially in terms of laptop mobility and user experience in daily life."
