There is still a fifth – and a sixth – HDR video format, as Technicolor's bankruptcy does not affect the 'Advanced HDR by Technicolor' format, which is starting to appear in some TVs.
Advanced HDR by Technicolor was developed in partnership between InterDigital, Philips and Technicolor. However, before Technicolor filed for bankruptcy in February 2025, it sold the IP to InterDigital, the company confirmed.
The HDR video format will continue to be called Advanced HDR by Technicolor.
What's the status anyway?
Along with HDR10, HLG and Dolby Vision, Advanced HDR by Technicolor was one of the early HDR video formats.
However, it has struggled to gain traction. LG initially announced plans to support it but as confirmed in FlatpanelsHD's review of LG CX from 2020, LG later abandoned the partnership.
Since then, work has continued and Advanced HDR by Technicolor is now supported in newer TVs from Hisense and RCA with ATSC 3.0 tuners. It is also supported in set-top boxes produced by Tolka and Geniatech.
The fifth and sixth HDR formats
We originally called it the fourth HDR video format – after HDR10, HLG and Dolby Vision – but since HDR10+ has started to gain traction, let's now refer to it as the fifth. There is also a sixth format called HDR Vivid, which is currently exclusive to China.
- "The demand for HDR is expected to continue growing in 2025, especially as more live and on-demand content in HDR is created. Our recent partnership with Plex, a major provider of content distribution services, further demonstrates the significance of HDR across all platforms, whether broadcast or streaming. Additionally, live sports events will continue to be an opportunity for broadcasters and streaming service providers to engage with HDR workflows," said Valérie Allie, Senior Director of the Media Services Group at InterDigital.
