Samsung Display to boost QD-OLED monitor output 50%, launch cheaper panels

26 Mar 2025 | Rasmus Larsen |

In a continued rapid industry shift from LCD to OLED, Samsung Display has announced plans to significantly increase production of QD-OLED monitor panels and an expansion to cheaper panels.

While market research firm Omdia projects 35% growth in the OLED monitor market in 2025, Samsung Display has even more ambitious plans to increase production of QD-OLED monitor panels by 50% in 2025, the company said in a press release.

According to Omdia, OLED monitor shipments grew from just 8,300 in 2021 to 160,000 in 2022, 820,000 in 2023, and 1.43 million in 2024. Samsung Display's QD-OLED currently holds a 71.2% market share, with LG Display's WOLED making up most of the rest. The two display makers supply panels to Asus, Dell, MSI, LG Electronics, Samsung Electronics, and many more brands.

Shift from LCD to OLED

The industry transition from LCD to OLED in monitors is accelerating, particularly in gaming where OLED delivers major improvements in picture quality and speed. - "The technological shift from LCD to OLED in the monitor market is expected to accelerate further, driven by the differentiated image quality and technological superiority demonstrated by QD-OLED," said Brad Jung, VP and Head of Large Display Marketing, Samsung Display. "We will introduce various innovations and products to meet the expectations of our customers as quickly as possible."

In 2025, Samsung Display will launch its first 500Hz QD-OLED, scheduled for mass production in the first half, and its first 27-inch 4K QD-OLED, while LG Display is preparing its first 4-layer tandem WOLED panel for monitors, as reported exclusively by FlatpanelsHD. QD-OLED beyond gaming

As also reported by FlatpanelsHD in January, QD-OLED monitors will in 2025 move beyond gaming for the first time, with Dell as a launch partner. Samsung Display added that it has plans to expand QD-OLED gaming monitors to the "mid-to-low price range" and introduce panels designed for media and work. The display maker no longer produces LCD panels of any kind. - "Samsung Display plans to strategically expand its product lineup in both consumer and business sectors to meet high market demand and enhance its market influence. For the gaming lineup, the company plans to enter the mid-to-low price range in addition to its existing high-end offerings. Samsung Display is also preparing a diverse range of B2C products designed to meet varied consumer needs, from engaging with media such as films to performing work tasks," said Samsung Display. "The company is actively engaging with key clients to finalize the timing of product launches in these sectors."
