The PlayStation 5 console is getting more expensive in Europe, the UK, Australia and New Zealand. The external disc drive is getting cheaper.
The announcement from Sony came over the weekend:
- "With a backdrop of a challenging economic environment, including high inflation and fluctuating exchange rates, SIE has made the tough decision to raise the recommended retail price (RRP) of the PlayStation 5 console in select markets in Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), Australia and New Zealand," said Isabelle Tomatis, Vice President of Global Marketing, Sony Interactive Entertainment.
25% price increase since launch
PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020 with a recommended price of 400 Euro for the digital edition without disc drive and 500 Euro with disc drive.
In August 2022 Sony raised the price to 450 and 550 Euro, respectively – an increase of 50 Euro.
This week, Sony will once again raise the price of the digital PS5 by 50 Euro to 500 Euro across Europe. The price is also going up in the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand:
Europe: PS5 Digital Edition – €499.99 (no pricing changes for the standard PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive)
UK: PS5 Digital Edition – £429.99 (no pricing changes for the standard PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive)
Australia: Standard PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – AUD $829.95. PS5 Digital Edition – AUD $749.95
New Zealand: Standard PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – NZD $949.95. PS5 Digital Edition – NZD $859.95
The price of the PlayStation 5 Pro will not be adjusted.
In Europe, it corresponds to a 25% price increase since the PS5 launched in 2020. Previous generations of PlayStation have typically become cheaper over time.
Disc drive gets a price cut
Conversely, Sony is lowering the price of the disc drive for PS5, which now costs 80 Euro instead of 120 Euro, and £70 in the UK. It is also getting less expensive in Australia and New Zealand.
The external drive can be mounted onto the side of the new PlayStation 5 Slim. It cannot be connected to the non-Slim edition.
