From Netflix and the makers of Planet Earth, the new eight-part nature documentary series Our Planet will debut in 4K resolution on April 5. It is the results of a 4-year project that Netflix promises will “entertain and captivate”. New trailer gives us a sneak peek.
Update 5.4.2019: Our Planet is now available on Netflix and this article has been pushed to the front page (it was published on March 20). It has also been confirmed that the documentary series can be enjoyed in 4K Dolby Vision. Netflix previously said that it would debut in 4K.
’Our Planet’ on Netflix
Netflix has confirmed the launch date and released a new trailer for Our Planet. The company calls it a “groundbreaking original documentary” that has been filmed in 50 countries across all the continents over a period of 4 years. 600 people have been involved, including the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
- “In the first episode, ‘One Planet’ viewers will travel from the Brazilian rainforest to Norway’s Svalbard archipelago, discovering how each fragile habitat is connected and why they are all essential for life to thrive on this planet. Subsequent episodes capture Earth’s key biomes, or habitats: the icy frozen worlds, jungles, coastal seas, deserts and grasslands, high seas, freshwater regions and forests,” said Netflix.
Our Planet is an eight-part series. It will be available to stream in 4K resolution but apparently not HDR. Update: Dolby Vision confirmed. The series will be accompanied by behind-the-scenes content.
- ” Unprecedented in scope and ambition, Our Planet will entertain and captivate a global audience of all ages,” the company added. ”Thanks to an extensive team that includes some of the world’s best wildlife cinematographers, researchers and scientists — and the latest in 4K camera technology — each episode features several stunning sequences that have never been filmed before.”
Local narrators in 10 languages
In addition to David Attenborough who will narrate the English version, Penélope Cruz and Salma Hayek will narrate the Spanish-language version. The series will feature local narrators in 10 languages, Netflix said. Besides showcasing the wonders of nature, Our Planet puts the spotlight on how humans are disrupting nature.
- “All across our planet, crucial connections are being disrupted,” Attenborough said. “What we do in the next 20 years will determine the future for all life on Earth.”
To help spread the message, the company is permitting a “one-time educational screening”, which means that educators can show the series once a semester.
Our Planet will debut on Netflix globally on April 5. The company has released this trailer.
