Samsung has good news for all resolution lowers. Samsung is going to showcase a new 10.1-inch LCD panel with impressive 2560x1600 pixel resolution made specifically for tablets at the SID 2011 exhibition in Los Angeles. LG is planning something similar.
10.1-inch LCD with 2560x1600 resolution
Samsung is moving fast in the display area and until we get those beautiful OLED screens we can endure the waiting time, knowing that the LCD technology is also constantly being improved.
Samsung Galaxy 10.1 has a 1280x800 resolution today
At SID 2011 Samsung is going to show off a new 10.1-inch LCD panel made for tablets. The extremely high 2560x1600 resolution means that the panel has a 300 ppi (pixel per inch), which is very close to the LCD panel in iPhone 4 that has a 326 ppi resolution.
The high resolution is made possible by a so-called PenTile RGBW pixel structure, where Samsung has added a white subpixel to the traditional red, blue and green subpixel combination. This combination allows Samsung to increase resolution and allow a brighter LCD panel that uses less power.
Apple iPad 2 has a 1024x768 resolution today
This is the first panel in this size to utilize such as high resolution and even though Samsung has announced no plans to mass produce it, we expect them to do so at the SID 2011 exhibition in Los Angeles next week. LG is expected to showcase something similar and mentions in a press release that they want to showcase AH-IPS LCD panels with “ultra-high resolution”.
Samsung’s own Galaxy Tab 10.1 has a 10.1 inch panel with a 1280x800 resolution. Apple’s iPad 2 has a 1024x768 resolution. Before the iPad 2 was launched rumors indicated that Apple would utilize a high resolution display but the rumors failed to materialize. Samsung’s new 10.1-inch panel looks to be aimed for Samsung’s own tablets based on the size and aspect ratio and that also makes it a no-go for Apple’s iPad 3. iPad 2 is currently utilizing LCD panels from LG and it will be interesting to see what LG has up their sleeve to challenge Samsung at SID 2011.
Samsung is also looking into mass producing OLED panels for tablets.
