This rumor started floating around in March 2011 and now KoreaTimes says that Sony is moving forward with their plans of using passive 3D technology after the breakup with Samsung.
Passive Sony 3DTVs?
Sony, Samsung, Panasonic and Sharp are supporters of the active 3D technology with shutter glasses. LG, Philips and Vizio support the passive 3D technology. Sony is now considering jumping to the other camp.
Sony is interested in using LG’s passive 3D technology
The rumor started back in March 2011 with word that Sony was in talks with LG about incorporating their IPS based LCD panels with passive 3D technology. KoreaTimes now says that Sony is moving forward with their plans to buy LG’s LCD panels for future Sony TVs, which also means that Sony could be releasing passive 3D Bravia TVs in the future.
KoreaTimes says that LG is doubling production of panels for Sony, and also says that orders for Samsung is declining, even though Sony’s 2012 TVs still use them.
OLED talks
KoreaTimes also states that LG and Sony have been discussing OLED technology during the recent meetings, and the possibility of outsourcing LG’s OLED panels to Sony. An unnamed LG executive with knowledge of the negotiations adds;
- “As Sony has already put LG Display on a list of key suppliers, future talks will cover its OLED panel outsourcing from the latter half of this year,”
LG initiates OLED production in July 2012.
