Sharp starts producing 5" 1080p displays

Sharp has started mass production of 5-inch 1080p (Full HD) LCD displays for smartphones. The displays have an incredible pixel density of 443 ppi (pixels per inch).

The full-scale production started late last month (September), Sharp says. Production will further ramp up through October as customers start using the panel in consumer products.

Sharp recently exhibited this 6,1-inch display with a pixel density of 498 ppi. The new 5-inch panel is very close in terms of pixel density

1080p resolution, or just above 2 million tiny pixels, in a small 5-inch display is a remarkable achievement and shows what Sharp can do with the latest LCD production methods. The panel has incredible 443 pixels per inch, which is considerably higher than in most smartphones today that hover just above 300 ppi. However, it also exceeds most humans’ ability to distinguish details.

The display is said to use “a new pixel design” but we have not been able to confirm what that means. The display panel does not use Sharp’s IGZO technology but instead continuous grain (CG) silicon developed together with a partner. LG has already showcased a 5-inch 1080p display but Sharp is the first to initiate mass production.

The display could be integrated in the rumored 5-inch HTC phablet but this is purely speculation for now. No smartphone manufacturers have yet announced a 5-inch 1080p smartphone.
