Sharp was first to produce a 4K LCD panel for monitors, and it has been adopted in a range of models. LG confirms that they have also started production of a 4K panel for PC monitors; a 31-inch LCD panel with 4096x2160 pixels.
LG starts production of 31" 4K LCD panel
Sharp’s 4K panel is used in Sharp’s own 4K monitor as well Asus, ViewSonic, and Dell’s 4K monitors. Samsung also recently announced its first 4K monitor, and LG now joins the pack with a 31-inch panel that is slightly smaller than the other 31.5-inch panels.
LG.Display has started producing a new 4K LCD monitor panel
LG’s panel uses the 4K cinema format with 4096x2160 pixels, whereas the current models use the 4K “TV format” with 3840x2160 pixels. LG says that the panel is based on the IPS technology, and has 1000:1 contrast ratio, 450 cd/m2 brightness, and 178/178 viewing angles. It is also said to operate with 10-bit color depth and it will support wide color gamuts due to the special LED backlighting system.
LG confirms that they have started producing the panel (LM310UH1-SLA1), so expect to see it in a new LG monitor in the near future, as well as in other PC monitor maker’s - possibly Apple – 4K monitors. You can find more information in LG’s spec sheet.
