Vonetize has announced that they will launch the first global 4K streaming service on Smart TVs next week, beating Netflix. Vonetize wants to stream 4K movies from Hollywood studios via HEVC to Samsung’s Ultra HD TVs.
Vonetize to start streaming in 4K
Vonetize wants to offer Hollywood content from Disney, Warner Bros, and Miramax in 4K resolution. The new 4K streaming service will debut next week on Samsung’s Smart TVs.
Vonetize is already managing apps and services on Smart TVs from Samsung, LG, Toshiba and others, but the new 4K streaming service will debut as a dedicated app. In addition to the app, Vonetize will integrate 4K streaming into services such as Total Music, Planet Knowledge, Baby Channel, Bollywood Channel, and SmartVOD.
Vonetize will be using3840x2160 pixel resolution and use HEVC (H.265) compression, which is said to be twice as effective as the current mpeg4 H.264 compression. An internet connection of minimum 16 Mb/s is required.
Vonetize is hoping to beat Netflix to the finish line. Netflix will start streaming in 4K in the “first half of 2014”. However, as Vonetize will be using HEVC it will require a 2014 Samsung Smart TV. The 2013 Samsung Smart TVs have no native HEVC support. The 2014 Samsung Smart TVs are expected to launch globally in April.
