Sony to use an OLED in the final Project Morpheus

When Sony unveiled its Oculus Rift-like prototype headset for PlayStation earlier this year, it used a LCD display. However, Sony plans to switch to a much better OLED display for the final retail version, according to PS4daily.

Project Morpheus to use OLED

Sony’s Project Morpheus is a virtual reality headset that is in many ways similar to the Oculus Rift. Sony has developed the VR headset specifically for PlayStation gaming.

The final retail version will reportedly use a super-fast OLED display with a resolution of 2560x1440 pixels, according to the same source that leaked the Project Morpheus news earlier this year.

This is actually higher than the latest development kit of Oculus Rift, which uses a OLED display with 1920x1080 pixels. Oculus has hinted that the final version will feature an even higher resolution, which is necessary to avoid visible pixels and borders because the display sits so close to the viewer’s eyes.

Virtual reality could be a major new platform for games, video, and simulation. Sony has not announced a release date for Project Morpheus, but it will not be released this year. Ditto for Oculus.

FlatpanelsHD will publish a review of the new Oculus Rift (DK2) soon.
