10 million Roku boxes sold - 5 billion hours watched

16 Sep 2014 | Rasmus Larsen |

Roku has announced that it has sold 10 million streaming players since the debut in 2008. This makes Roku one of the most successful streaming players to date, except for the Apple TV, which has sold over 20 million.

Half as many as Apple TV

As TVs enter the internet era, streaming players such as the Apple TV, Roku and Chromecast become powerful enablers. They let you watch TV from many different services and experience a world that was never available on broadcast TV channels.

Roku has now sold 10 million players and says that people use them a lot, especially for Netflix, HBO, Hulu and the other popular services. More than 5 billion hours of content has been streamed since 2008, and Roku expects to hit 3 billion hours in 2014 alone. The trend is accelerating fast. Roku also boasts over 1,800 “channels” or apps.

Roku is one of the most successful players in the market, but it is still falling behind Apple. Apple said in April 2014 that it had sold 20 million Apple TV boxes, and it is probably safe to assume that more have been sold in months following April. Chromecast is another contender in the space, but Google has only said that they have sold “millions” of the small streaming stick that was launched in 2013.

Roku recently announced that they have partnered with Hisense and TCL in bringing Roku TVs to the market. Roku hopes to transform into a full-fledged TV platform.
