Samsung: All 4K monitors in 2015 will support FreeSync

24 Nov 2014 | Rasmus Larsen |

Monitor manufacturers are starting to adapt adaptive frame rate technologies - and that is amazing. Samsung says that all of its 2015 Ultra HD monitors will support AMD’s FreeSync.

Adaptive frame rate is coming

FreeSync is AMD’s open-source alternative to Nvidia’s G-Sync. In essence, these systems automatically adjust the frame rate of the monitor to that of the content – for example a game. So if your game runs at 40fps in 4K – or just jumps up and down in frame rate – the monitor will dynamically adjust the frame rate instantly, making the gaming experience butter-smooth.

Samsung plans to release five Ultra HD (3840x2160) monitors in 2015, including the UE590 in 23.6 and 28 inch sizes, and the UE850 in 23.6, 27 and 31.5 inch sizes. All five will support FreeSync over DisplayPort, confirms Samsung.

This also means that Samsung will be the first company to officially support FreeSync, which was unveiled earlier this year. FreeSync is made possible by the DisplayPort standard, which is slowly replacing the older DVI and D-SUB (VGA) standards in modern monitors and PCs, and a much better choice in PCs than HDMI.

FreeSync is supported by AMD’s Radeon R9 290 and R9 290X graphics cards – or newer.

TVs do still not support anything similar, but it could potentially be big news in TVs, too.

FreeSync monitors are expected to be cheaper than G-Sync monitors as AMD’s alternative is open source, unlike Nvidia’s variant.
