Previous LG TVs will not get webOS 3.0 - will instead receive "light" update

At CES 2016, LG unveiled its new 2016 TVs that come with the third generation of the company’s webOS operating system built in. Previous TVs will not get updated to webOS 3.0 but will receive a “light” update, says LG.

Previous TVs will get webOS 2.x

When LG introduced webOS 2.0 last year it had no plans to bring the update to the 2014 TVs. After pressure from owners and the press, the company changed its mind and released a “webOS 1.4” update that included most of the new features of version 2.0.

It will be the same story this year. LG will release a “webOS 2.x” update to bring some of the new features of 3.0 to previous TVs. LG insists that the version number in webOS refers to more than just software. It also has to do with hardware, the company says.

It has not been confirmed if the update will be available for the 2014 TVs, but it has been confirmed that it is coming to the 2015 TVs. We are not sure exactly which features it will include when it starts rolling out later this year, but you can learn more about the new features in webOS 3.0 here.
