LG had already added the “HDR Game mode” to high-end 2016 OLEDs and, as promised, the update for the B6 OLED is now also rolling out. The update also applies to certain LCDs.
HDR Game mode on B6 OLED
With the advent of HDR on game consoles, input lag in HDR mode has become a concern - especially because most 2016 TVs were not designed for HDR gaming to being with.
The C6, E6 and G6 OLED had already gained an ‘HDR Game mode’ via a firmware update in the US and Europe, and the update for the most affordable B6 OLED is now also rolling out in the US. It will arrive in Europe later.
At the moment you have to download it from the US support site and it install it manually via USB but it should be available as an over-the-air update soon.
LG told FlatpanelsHD at CES 2017 that the update will bring down input lag in the both the HDR mode and SDR mode to “less than 30 ms”. That will make B6 one of the fastest TVs on the market.
The update applies to the 55 and 65-inch B6 OLED TVs as well as all the UH7700, UH7500, and 75”” UH6300 LCDs. These TVs all use a MediaTek chipsets, unlike some of LG’s higher-end TVs that use an in-house chip solution.
LG has just announced the new OLED line-up for 2017 that brings down input lag even further to 21 ms in HDR mode. The company is clearly trying to cater to discerning users, including gamers.
