HLG – or Hybrid Log Gamma – is the third HDR format and was developed by the broadcast industry. At CES, LG confirmed to FlatpanelsHD that it will add support for HLG on 2016 OLED and ‘Super UHD’ LCDs through a firmware update.
HLG is broadcast HDR
There are currently three relevant HDR formats; the open HDR10 format; the premium Dolby Vision format; and the HLG format. The latter was developed by the broadcast industry to enable TV channels to carry both SDR and HDR video information in the same signal in order to save previous bandwidth.
UK’s BBC and Japan’s NHK are the driving forces behind the new format. BBC recently initiated a public test aimed to offer the ‘Planet Earth II’ documentary series in HLG. However, very few TVs have been capable of received the signal.
At the huge Las Vegas show LG announced that all of its 2017 models will come with HLG built-in. The Korean company also confirmed to FlatpanelsHD that certain 2016 TVs will receive a firmware update that adds support for HLG.
2016 OLED and Super UHD
All 2016 OLEDs will receive the firmware update, meaning B6, C6, E6 and G6. In addition, LG will make the update available to the 2016 ‘Super UHD’ LCDs, meaning UH95, UH85 and UH77.
- ”HLG is being implemented in 2016 OLED and Super UHD,” LG told FlatpanelsHD at CES 2017. ”There is no date set yet as it has been very recently decided.”
Throughout the second half of 2016, the company showcased HLG on select 2016 TVs. However, it will take more time to finalize the HLG firmware update so LG is not yet ready to comment on timing.
