LG 2017 OLED to gain Technicolor picture mode, later 'Advanced HDR'

11 Sep 2017 | Rasmus Larsen |

LG 2017 OLED TVs will gain a ’Technicolor Expert’ picture mode, optimized by Technicolor’s team of color scientists. The TVs will also later gain ‘Advanced HDR by Technicolor’, the companies announced at IFA.

Collaboration with Technicolor

Technicolor has started using LG OLED TVs as “consumer reference displays in the production of home delivery versions of major Hollywood movies and television content such as Logan and Sense 8”.

To build on the partnership LG will add a new ‘Technicolor Expert’ picture mode to its 2017 OLED TVs. It will be available from the picture menu after a firmware update later this year.

- “While doing color work on season two of the Netflix series Sense 8, LG’s OLED technology was crucial when collaborating with writer/director Lana Wachowski - who has offices on the other side of the country - and cinematographer John Toll, in Hollywood,” said Tony Dustin, senior colorist at Technicolor. “OLED technology’s true blacks, color saturation and depth ensured that all of us were looking at the same colors, even when we were not physically together. On top of that, we’re excited that LG OLED TVs are readily available on the market for consumers wishing to experience LG OLED TV picture quality, and this gives us confidence that the images we were working on will be accurately represented for audiences at home.”

LG is working on adding the same picture mode to its high-end 2017 LCD models.

Furthermore, LG will later add support for ’Advanced HDR by Technicolor’ to its 2017 OLED models. The company emphasized that no other manufacturer can offer a HDR suite this comprehensive. No timeline was announced.

At IFA, Samsung and Panasonic announced that they are joining forces to promote the open HDR10+ format as front against Dolby Vision. LG has yet to comment on its plans for HDR10+.
