LG and Samsung demonstrate bendable TVs

As always, some demonstrations at CES are designed to attract attention, and the South Korean manufacturers had both brought bendable TV screens. The TVs can switch between curved and flat states, and the curvature can be controlled with the remote.

The rumors were right, as both South Korean electronics giants demonstrated bendable TVs at CES 2014. Samsung’s flexible TV is based on LCD technology, whereas LG’s is based on OLED technology.

LG’s TV was the most impressive of the two. It measures 77 inches in size and is based on LG’s OLED technology. It is not clear what the benefit of the bendable function is, but LG says that you can control the curvature of the TV with a remote control. LG calls it the world’s first flexible OLED TV, and further explains that the TV has undergone thousands of hours of testing in order to ensure that it will last in the long run. The bendable panel does not affect picture quality, LG says, and it surely looks great with its 4K resolution.

Samsung’s flexible TV is a bit larger at 85 inches, but is instead based on LCD technology. The curvature of the panel can similarly be controlled with the remote control, so you can choose to make it completely flat.

Neither of the two TV makers have announced plans to launch the screens, but says that the demonstrations show what is possible with today’s TV technology. One day you might be able to roll up your TV and take it with you.
