Finally, you might say. Oculus has been teasing a consumer version of the virtual reality headset for years. Many developers have had the Oculus in their hands but early next year you will be able to buy one, too.

The Rift is the first of its kind and most talked-about VR headset and it has seen strong support from the developer community. When it launches, it will have a full ecosystem of games, movies, and other experiences. Oculus calls it an “integrated hardware/software tech stack”.

- “The Oculus Rift builds on the presence, immersion, and comfort of the Crescent Bay prototype with an improved tracking system that supports both seated and standing experiences, as well as a highly refined industrial design, and updated ergonomics for a more natural fit.”

No technical details have been announced but since it is based on the work with Crescent Bay we are certain that it uses an OLED display with a fairly high resolution. Oculus is promising to reveal more details about the hardware, software, input, and made-for-VR games and experiences in the coming weeks.

This is just the beginning, says Oculus. Pre-orders will start later this year.
