There were lots of great TVs and display technologies at CES 2019 and it is hard to pick just one but LG’s rollable OLED TV is our 'Best of CES 2019'. We also want to highlight Samsung's microLED, Apple's TV partnerships, and Sony's 360-degree audio.

Best of CES 2019
Last year, we picked Samsung’s 'The Wall' as our Best of CES because, for a TV enthusiast, what is more exciting than an entirely new display technology? Samsung was once again talking microLED at this year’s show but it remains mostly a concept.

What has transitioned from concept prototype to an actual product is the rollable OLED TV. Just a decade ago, a large rollable TV would seem like science fiction. In 2019, it will be an actual consumer product - and it looks extremely cool. It is truly remarkable how OLED technology can enable these types of products without compromising picture quality.

Sure, most of us probably can’t afford it and no we are not sure that it will revolutionize the TV industry like LG is imagining but it is one of those products that makes you dream. You don’t just want the TV. You also want that apartment with the amazing view that LG is using in its press photos. You want to be that guy sitting in the sofa.

That is why we think LG’s rollable OLED TV is ‘Best of CES 2019’. It pushes the boundaries and it is a real product.



Other candidates
We still think that Samsung’s microLED is very cool but it Samsung must take the step now.

If we were asked to pick the most important development from a market perspective, it would be Apple’s partnerships with TV makers. It is a very significant move with big implications that we will be exploring in the near future.

The most mesmerizing experience at CES 2019 for us was a backroom demo where Sony was demonstrating the potential of object-based audio technology for music. It was a big set-up with lots of speakers but they later reproduced almost the same effect through a pair of headphones after having measured our ears. It was truly impressive and has the potential to take music beyond the limitations of stereo. You really have to hear it to believe it.

We are display guys at heart so we are not prioritizing other product categories at CES. Perhaps there is a cooler refrigerator out there somewhere or perhaps someone showcased a technology that has the potential to change time and space but we don’t care much. The TV industry is pulsating with energy and we think these are very exciting times. See you next year at CES 2020.
