Panasonic's first miniLED LCD TVs arrive this year with MX950

13 Jun 2023 | Rasmus Larsen |

In addition to its new OLED ranges, Panasonic has unveiled a line-up of LCD models including MX950 which will for the first time in a Panasonic LCD TV take advantage of miniLED.

Panasonic previously phased out zone dimming LCD TVs from its line-up focus on OLED technology for high-end TVs. The company is now bringing back high-end LCD TVs in the form of MX950 and MX940.

43 to 75 inches

MX940 will feature a LED zone dimming system behind the LCD panel in 43 and 50 inches while MX950 is an extension in 55, 65 and 75 inches with more advanced miniLED zone dimming. Panasonic did not specify the number of zones but we are chasing more information at the launch event in Berlin including information on the LCD panel type.

These TVs are not designed to replace any OLED models but rather to give consumers choice. In fact, Panasonic will launch even more advanced OLED TVs this year with MLA technology (MZ2000) as well as affordable OLED TVs with Google TV in the 8 series (MZ800). MX950 and MX940 feature the same 'HCX Pro AI' processor as the OLED models and two HDMI 2.1 ports with support for 4K120, VRR and AMD FreeSync. They also support Dolby Vision IQ and HDR10+ Adaptive as well as the new adaptive Filmmaker Mode that takes your viewing environment into account. These will compete with miniLED LCD TVs from Samsung, Sony, TCL, and others in the European market.

In addition, Panasonic will in 2023 launch mid-range MX800, MX710 and MX700 LCD models without local dimming. MX950 and MX940 feature Panasonic's own MyHomeScreen 8.0 while MX800 features Amazon's FireOS, and MX700 and MX7100 Google TV.

In other words, Panasonic will this year offer TV models built on three different TV operating systems. How does that make sense? We will try to ask the people responsible later today in Berlin. FlatpanelsHD is confirming availability and pricing details with Panasonic in Berlin.
