Panasonic unveils two Ultra HD TVs - AX900 & AX800

Panasonic has unveiled two new Ultra HD TVs. AX800 and the even more premium AX900 are said to deliver “plasma-like picture quality”. The AX800 will be available shortly and AX900 is coming this autumn.

AX900 and AX800 Ultra HD TVs

Panasonic unveiled AX800 at CES 2014 in January, and has now confirmed that it will be coming to Europe, too. The AX900 is a surprise. It will launch this autumn, but Panasonic has already acknowledged the existence of it.

AX900 is not just another Ultra HD TV. It will deliver the ultimate in 4K picture quality, says Panasonic. No details or specifications have been released yet, but a photo of the tentative design is seen below.

Panasonic describes the AX900 like this:
- ”The AX900 offers a superior panel, the highest class of local dimming, and a powerful processor for a seamless, beyond smart experience. The AX900 is another testament to ultimate 4K picture quality encased in a modern, timeless design”

Panasonic’s AX800 is launching now in Europe and the US. It is another high-end Ultra HD TV with some interesting picture quality aspects. It uses a so-called Studio Master panel that incorporates some of the same color technologies found in Panasonic’s plasma TVs. It can also reproduce very deep blacks thanks to a full local dimming system.

The TV supports HEVC - the successor to mpeg4 - and HDMI 2.0. It can also reproduce a wider color gamut than most Ultra HD TVs. It is not the full Rec.2020 defined in the Ultra HD standard, but instead 98% of DCI, which is the color space used in movie theatres. It also has a 4K THX certification.

A new Smart TV platform is introduced with Life+ and Panasonic has integrated a faster Hexa-core Pro processor that should improve speed and navigation. The European AX800 also comes equipped with a twin-tuner.

AX800 will be available in 50, 58 and 65” sizes in Europe, and 58, 65 and 85” sizes in the US.
