4K monitors are barely out yet, but monitor makers are already taking the next step. Dell’s new 27-inch UP2715K has an incredible 5120x2880 pixel resolution - almost 75% more pixels than a 4K panel.

The monitor is for professionals, but it also demonstrates where we are headed in display technology. PC monitors get more pixels, and combined with hiDPI modes in operating systems, you get incredibly detailed pictures.

The “5K” Dell UP2715K uses a 27-inch panel with 5120x2880 pixels. That translates to a pixel density of 218 ppi, which is on par with high-resolution laptops such as the Retina Macbook Pro. It also has a glass front with an anti-reflective coating.

Right now the monitor needs two DisplayPort 1.2 connectors to generate a full picture, which demonstrates the need for more powerful cable standards, such as DisplayPort 1.3.

Dell UP2715K will be come available by year’s end for $2500 US dollars.
