Google developing displays that you can combine

06 Oct 2014 | Rasmus Larsen |

Google’s research lab has already demonstrated self-driving cars and Google Glass to the world, and according to the Wall Street Journal they are also working on giant displays that you can build, like Lego, from smaller displays.

A modular display

The concept is appealing, and it seems that Google is taking steps towards realizing it. Three people have told WSJ that Google is developing the technology to make it possible in the Google X laboratory.

The idea is that you can use smaller displays to build one larger screen, “like Lego”. The giant screen will be able to reproduce video with no visible seams between the smaller screens. The modular approach will also allow people to build non-rectangular screen and potentially you could create a giant TV at home.

The project is reportedly led by Mary Lou Jepsen, a former professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the founder of three display technology companies. She was included on the list of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time Magazine. She has also spoken publicly on several occasions about display technology and the future, for example during this 2010 TED Talk.

Former Samsung and Qualcomm employees are also said to be involved in the project.

The project is still in the very early stages and is kept under wraps at Google. Few details are known, but the sources say that there are several major challenges that have to be addressed before it can become reality.
