Amazon to launch ad-based streaming service in 2015

24 Nov 2014 | Rasmus Larsen |

Amazon plans to roll out a new “ad-supported” video streaming service early next year, according to NY Post. Amazon reportedly wants to lure away subscribers from Netflix.

To take on Netflix

Amazon has been ramping up its video streaming ambitions in recent years with more content and better platform support. Amazon has even started producing originals - just like Netflix.

Amazon is now planning to offer an alternative to its current $99-a-year Instant Video that is bundled with Prime. The new service is believed to be significantly cheaper than Netflix because it is ad-supported.

Wall Street Journal reported in March that Amazon was considering the move, but sources now say that it is a done deal and that it will launch in early 2015.

Amazon will also introduce 4K streaming later this year.
