In a few weeks from now, the first TVs from Sony and Philips with Android TV built-in will hit stores. However, you can also get the Android TV experience by connecting a box. The first of its kind is called Nexus Player, created by Asus and Google.

Android TV is an operating system for your TV. It offers apps such as streaming services and games. The apps have been developed specifically for the TV screen, no mobile apps here. Services such as Netflix, YouTube and Google Play Movies are already available, and others should follow shortly.

Nexus Player also has Google Cast built-in, the system that has made Chromecast possible. This will make it easy to push content from your phone onto the TV screen. A small microphone has been integrated in the remote for voice search. If you want to play games such as The Walking Dead and Badland you can connect a game controller via bluetooth. The “official” version is available for 40 Euro.

Nexus Player is available for 99 Euro (or $99 in the US) in a total of fifteen countries. It is the first opportunity to get Android TV in your living room. Apple is expected to unveil a new Apple TV with an app store in June so it could be an interesting year for TVs.
