LG will invest $900 million in new flexible OLED plant

28 Jul 2015 | Rasmus Larsen |

LG has confirmed that its display arm, LG Display, will set up a new plant for producing flexible and rollable OLED panels. It will start mass production in 2017.

OLED panels for mobile devices

LG is already producing OLED TV panels and is currently ramping up capacity. The company has also recently started producing small-size flexible OLED displays for phones and watches such as the Apple Watch.

LG believes that demand for high-end mobile devices with OLEDs will increase so it is building another manufacturing plant to accommodate demand. LG confirmed at its quarterly earnings call that it will invest 1.05 trillion Won ($905 million USD) in the new OLED plant to be located in Gumi, Korea.

The new plant is a so-called 6th generation plant that operate with 1500x1850 mm substrates. LG is currently producing flexible OLED panels at a 4.5 generation plant. The new plant can produce larger displays.

Mass production will commence in the second quarter of 2017 with a monthly capacity of 7500 substrates, which corresponds to approximately 1.5 million 5.5-inch panels, or more if the OLED panels are smaller. It is four times as many as LG’s existing plant.
