Infuse 7.2 released with Spatial Audio support on tvOS/iOS 15

30 Sep 2021 | Rasmus Larsen |

The latest update to the popular media player app, Infuse, brings Spatial Audio support to your movie library on Apple TV 4K and iOS devices.

Spatial Audio in movies

Last week, Apple expanded Spatial Audio support to Apple TV 4K with the release of tvOS 15. With AirPods Max or Pro you get immersive surround sound from the movie along with dynamic head tracking. Spatial Audio works with 5.1, 7.1 and Dolby Atmos sources and it can sound quite impressive, as discussed in our Apple TV 4K 2021 review. However, only a handful of apps support Spatial Audio on Apple TV 4K at this time; apps like Apple TV app, Disney+ HBO Max and Netflix. You can now add Infuse to the list of compatible apps. - "Now, in iOS/tvOS 15, Infuse is able to utilize spatial audio while playing videos when using AirPods Pro or AirPods Max headphones," the company announced. "Spatial audio with dynamic head tracking brings theater-like sound that surrounds you from the movie or video you're watching, so that it seems as if the sound is coming from all around you. The sound field stays mapped to the device, and the voice stays with the actor or action on screen."

It allows you to enjoy your movies with improved sound in AirPods headphones. Our initial testing confirmed that it works with AAC 5.1, Dolby Digital 5.1, and DTS 5.1. It is a little unclear if Dolby Atmos soundtracks in Infuse get passed to the Spatial Audio system as the reporting function only mentions 'multichannel'. The competing Plex media player app also supports Spatial Audio if you enable the old video player in settings. The same is true for FE File Explorer although it lacks support for DTS 5.1 in Spatial Audio. In addition, Infuse 7.2 adds new quick settings and playback controls on iOS devices. The update is available now.
