Samsung 2022 TVs, Nvidia RTX 20/30 GPUs to support HDR10+ Gaming

23 Dec 2021 | Rasmus Larsen |

Samsung's new TVs and monitors as well as select Nvidia GPUs will be some of the first devices to support the new gaming extension of the HDR10+ with VRR and automated HDR calibration. Redout 2 will be one of the first games.

HDR10+ Gaming in 2022

In October, Samsung revealed its alternative to Dolby Vision for gaming. The so-called 'HDR10+ Gaming' extension is designed to work with local gaming (consoles/GPUs) and in game streaming. Ahead of CES 2022, Samsung has announced that select 2022 4K and 8K TVs (QB70A range and up) as well as unspecified gaming monitors will support HDR10+ Gaming. - "We are extremely proud to announce that the new HDR10+ Gaming standard will be adopted by Samsung’s 2022 Neo QLED line up with the Q70 TV series and above and gaming monitors, allowing users to enjoy a game-changing experience through cutting-edge visuals and richer, life-like images," said Seokwoo Yong, EVP and Head of R&D Team, Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics.

Samsung's 2022 TVs will support HDR10+ Gaming

Samsung did not make any announcements regarding its 2021 or 2020 models so it seems likely that only 2022 models will support HDR10+ Gaming. LG updated its 2020 and 2021 OLED models to support Dolby Vision 120Hz VRR. HDR10+ Gaming delivers VRR up to 120Hz, automated HDR calibration, and low latency source tone-mapping. Nvidia GPUs, first gaming

As part of the announcement, it was confirmed that Nvidia GeForce RTX 30 Series, RTX 20 Series and GTX 16 Series GPUs will also support HDR10+ Gaming, with driver updates scheduled to release sometime in 2022. - "Nvidia GeForce gamers can enjoy a brighter, more vivid and consistent HDR gaming experience on their monitors or TVs from the support of the new HDR10+ Gaming standard," said Vijay Sharma, Director of Product Management at Nvidia. Since Samsung is partnering with Nvidia for the launch we would not expect game consoles like PlayStation and Xbox to gain HDR10+ Gaming support. Sony has resisted HDR10+ since its inception and Microsoft recently enabled Dolby Vision gaming on Xbox Series S/X. Some of the first games to take advantage of HDR10+ Gaming will be Redout 2 and Pinball FX from Saber Interactive. Game Mechanic Studios' Happy Trails and the Kidnapped Princess is another title. - "We are very excited to help usher in a new era of video game picture quality. By adopting HDR10+ Gaming, gamers of all ages will enjoy cutting-edge visuals for the best overall gaming experience," said Todd Hollenshead, Head of Publishing at Saber Interactive. "The HDR10+ Gaming standard is genuinely raising the bar, and we are proud to be at the forefront of bringing it to market with games like Redout 2, the fastest 8K anti-gravity racer ever made, and with Pinball FX, the king of digital pinball, brought to life in a brand-new way." CES 2022 kicks off in early January so expect more details to emerge soon.
