Apple today launched Studio Display, a new 27-inch LCD monitor that features 5K resolution, speakers with spatial audio support, and a 'Center Stage' camera system.

Apple is back in the monitor business. After launching a high-end 32-inch zone-dimming LCD monitor in 2019, Apple has today unveiled the $1600 Studio Display. Studio Display features a 27-inch LCD panel with 5K resolution, 600 nits of brightness, DCI-P3 color coverage, and 10-bit colors. A True Tone system can automatically adjust the color temperature to match your viewing environment. It has an anti-reflective coating while nano-texture glass – first introduced in Apple's 32-inch high-end monitor – is optional. Apple's new LCD monitor does not support HDR.

The Studio Display is part of a new Studio line-up from Apple which also encompasses an extremely powerful Mac Studio computer with the company's new M1 Max and M1 Ultra chips. - "We couldn’t be more excited to introduce an entirely new Mac desktop and display with Mac Studio and Studio Display," said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. "Mac Studio ushers in a new era for the desktop with unbelievable performance powered by M1 Max and M1 Ultra, an array of connectivity, and a compact design that puts everything users need within easy reach. And Studio Display — with its stunning 5K Retina screen, along with the best combination of camera and audio ever in a desktop display — is in a class of its own." Inside the monitor is an A13 Bionic chip to control an advanced camera and audio system. The 12 megapixel ultra-wide camera supports Center Stage, meaning that it can automatically keep the user centered in the frame. The monitor also features three microphones and six speakers that support spatial audio for music and video in Dolby Atmos.

- "Four force-cancelling woofers minimize distortion and produce bold, articulate bass, and two high-performance tweeters create accurate mids and crisp highs. The speakers also support spatial audio for music and video with Dolby Atmos, creating a truly cinematic viewing experience. Altogether, Studio Display has the best combination of camera and audio ever in a desktop display," the company said. It features a Thunderbolt port and three USB-C ports (10 Gbps). A Thunderbolt connection can also deliver 96W of power to a Macbook. Up to three Studio Displays can be connected to a MacBook Pro.

The monitor has a design with an all-aluminum enclosure in a slim profile. The built-in stand allows the user to tilt the display up to 30 degrees. Studio Display also offers a tilt- and height-adjustable stand option with a counterbalancing arm. A VESA mount adapter option is available with support for landscape or portrait orientation. Apple's Studio Display will be available to order today for $1,599 ($1,499 for education) or $1800 with nano-texture glass. The tilt/height adjustable stand is $400. The monitor will start shipping on March 18.
