LG unveils 2023 "QNED" LCD TVs – 8K only in select markets

05 Jan 2023 | Rasmus Larsen |

The line-up of premium LCD TVs has been slimmed down and QNED85 is the only new miniLED 4K LCD from LG in 2023. 8K will be available only in select markets.

QNED85 has miniLED zone dimming while QNED80 is a slim edge-lit LCD TV with a 4K 120Hz panel and HDMI 2.1. QNED75 is a cheaper version without the slim design and advanced features. In addition, LG will launch new "NanoCell" LCDs and inexpensive 'UR' LCDs.

The big news is that LG has more or less abandoned 8K LCD. There were no new 8K LCD models in the briefings for North America and Europe that FlatpanelsHD attended. An LG spokesperson subsequently informed us that 8K LCD (QNED99) will be available in select markets only this year.

This marks a departure from the company's previous offerings in the 8K category that included one or two LCD models in major markets.

The company did not offer an explanation for the change but sluggish sales of 8K TVs in general are unlikely to improve after the European Commission's stricter energy regulations go into effect starting March 2023. LG will continue to offer a single 8K OLED model (Z3) in North America, Europe and other regions. However, it will likely remain prohibitively expensive. Slim design, webOS 23

LG highlighted an upgraded miniLED backlight system in QNED85 with over 1 million grayscales which is "64 times more" than conventional LED backlights in LCD TVs. This backlight system provides more granular backlight control but it remains to be seen if it can improve the picture quality of LG's contrast-poor IPS LCD panel. The TVs will be powered by the Alpha 7 Gen6 or Alpha 5 Gen6 video processors, scaled-down versions of the Alpha 9 that is reserved for the premium OLED TVs. QNED80 with the "ultra slim design" is 33% thinner than last year's model at 29.7 mm. The company will once again introduce a redesigned webOS interface with 'Quick Cards'. You can learn more about webOS 23 here. Overall, 2023 will again be a relatively minor improvement year for LG's LCD TVs as the company is shifting its focus to OLED TVs.
