2023 Samsung "Neo QLED" LCD TVs have more dimming zones

06 Jan 2023 | Rasmus Larsen |

Besides two new QD-OLED TV ranges, Samsung has announced 2023 LCD TVs, branded "Neo QLED", at CES. 8K will remain in the LCD line-up.

At first glance, there was not much new to report about Samsung's LCD TVs that have ceded the spotlight to the more advanced QD-OLED TVs, but we have now learned more about the 2023 LCD line-up consisting of the QN900C, QN800C, QN700C with 8K as well as QN95C, QN90C, and QN85C with 4K.

We hear that the high-end miniLED models have more dimming zones compared to the 2022 equivalents. How many? Samsung declines to comment on such matters but the 8K Association reports that at least one of the 8K ranges "will use 12K miniLEDs in the backlight with control of 1300 zones (up from 700 in 2022 models)", based on an official pre-briefing in South Korea. The high-end 4K LCD models will also have more dimming zones but we don't know how many. In theory, this should reduce – but not eliminate – the heavy blooming effect we observed last year in our review of QN95B. In addition, Samsung will launch more basic 'Q' and 'UC' series of LCD TVs without miniLED local dimming and other advanced features. There is also a refreshed line-up of lifestyle LCD TVs such as The Frame which will be available with a metal bezel option this year.

New features for 2023

Samsung's press material reveals a couple of other new features including a SDR-to-HDR upscaling feature called 'Auto HDR Remastering'. Zigbee and Matter Thread support is built directly built into the TVs (no dongle required in 2023) as part of Tizen 7.0. The TVs will also support the new Philips Hue Sync app. Samsung once again in 2023 highlights "14-bit processing and AI upscaling" but be aware that 14-bit relates to the backlight controller. There are still 10-bit LCD panels inside. They are powered by the 'Neural Quantum Processor' video processor and still support up to 144Hz. Samsung has not commented on HDMI 2.1 QMS support.

In select regions, they feature Tizen's Gaming Hub with access to game streaming services such as Xbox, GeForce Now, Amazon Luna and Utomik. Xbox remains TV-exclusive to Samsung for now. - "In 2023, upgrades for GameBar 3.0 with MiniMap Sharing and Virtual Aim Point elevate the experience for every type of gamer. MiniMap Sharing enables players to see the minimap of their game at-a-glance on any display while Virtual Aim Point, designed for first-person shooters (FPS), allows players to view more noticeable crosshairs in any game so they can make the perfect shot," added Samsung. Samsung's 2023 LCD models will be available this spring. Pricing details will be announced later.
