LG Display & Samsung Display will reportedly start producing micro OLED displays

15 Feb 2023 | Rasmus Larsen |

LG Display and Samsung Display are gearing up to produce micro OLED displays with ultra-high resolution that can be used in headsets, according to reports.

Samsung Display plans to build a pilot production line for micro OLED in Asan, South Korea, that is expected to start producing small quantities in the second half of the year, reports Korean newspaper ETNews.

Meanwhile, LG Display will be collaborating with Meta and SK Hynix to develop and produce micro OLED displays possibly starting in 2025 or 2026, reports Korean newspaper The Elec.

Micro OLED is an alternative to micro LED for small displays with ultra-high resolution – PPI (pixels per inch) in the thousands. They are initially intended for VR (Virtual Reality) AR (Augmented Reality) and other types of headsets, but may later also be used in other form factors such as cameras and binoculars.

Micro OLED displays are produced by depositing OLEDs on a silicon wafer instead of glass or plastic substrates, meaning that it requires a semiconductor manufacturing partner. Samsung has the production facilities in place but LG does not, which is why LG Display has tapped SK Hynix for wafer production. SK Hynix is planning to use legacy 28nm or 45nm process nodes at its M10 wafer line in South Korea, according to The Elec. The reports claim that Samsung Display's micro OLED displays are intended for headsets made by Samsung Electronics, Qualcomm, and Google, whereas LG Display's display are intended for future headsets from Meta (Facebook). Apple was also highlighted as a potential customer, although the American company is expect to use micro OLED displays from Japan's Sony in its first headset. - Source: ETNews, The Elec
