Sony has opened up testing of its new PlayStation 5 cloud gaming platform to select users and it supports PS5 game streaming at up to 4K resolution.

In June, Sony announced plans for PS5 cloud gaming for PlayStation Plus (Premium) subscribers in addition to the existing cloud gaming options for PS4 and PS3 games.

A public beta is now online on an invitation-only basis and a ResetEra user reports (via The Verge) that there is an option to select between 720, 1080p, 1440p and 2160p PS5 game streaming.

Microsoft' Xbox Cloud Gaming currently supports up to 1080p at 60fps while Nvidia's GeForce Now supports up to 4K at 60fps on select TV platforms – and 4K at 120fps on PCs.

It is not clear if Sony's PS5 game streaming will support HDR10 and/or Dolby Atmos audio.

It was also confirmed by the user that Sony's PS5 cloud gaming platform supports cloud saves and that available games currently include God of War: Ragnarok, Horizon Forbidden West, Fortnite, Fall Guys, Destiny 2, Returnal, Demon’s Souls, Death Stranding, Sackboy A Big Adventure and Destruction All Stars.

Sony has said that it will support both subscription games and compatible purchased titles.

But beyond that there are still many unanswered questions. For example, will a PlayStation 5 console be required, which kind of defeats the purpose, or will Sony launch apps for Android TV, Smart TVs etc?

Sony has not commented on the launch timeframe either.
