First game in HDR10+ is 'The First Descendant'

21 Aug 2023 | Rasmus Larsen |

The first game in HDR10+ will be The First Descendant that will go be released in open beta in September. HDR10+ is supported on PCs but not yet game consoles.

After Dolby Vision gaming came to Xbox Series X/S in late 2021, game developer Nexon has worked together with Samsung to release the first game in the competing HDR10+ format.

HDR10+, like Dolby Vision, can use dynamic metadata on scene-by-scene basis to have the TV or display adjust its HDR parameters automatically. Samsung says that this should eliminate the hassle of manual HDR adjustments for each game.

- "By adopting HDR10+ Gaming, we are bringing the game to life in a way that was previously not possible," said Hyun Kim, EVP and Deputy Head of Business Development, Nexon. "This partnership with Samsung is also raising the bar in HDR gaming, and we are excited to usher in this new standard of picture quality in video games."

The base HDR10 format, which the vast majority of new HDR games are released in today, does not support dynamic metadata but still offers an expanded luminance and color range.

Game consoles do not support HDR10+

While Dolby Vision is supported on Xbox Series X/S, HDR10+ is not supported on any existing game console. Samsung has said that it is working to expand support but HDR10+ is nevertheless unlikely to come to game consoles in the near future. Sony does not support HDR10+ on TVs either and Microsoft has its partnership with Dolby. Nintendo does not support HDR gaming at all. Samsung claims that the HDR10+ ecosystem comprises 155 partners and over 7000 certified devices including TVs, monitors, projectors, smartphones, tablets, set-top boxes and more.

HDR10+ The First Descendant

You need a recent Samsung TV or gaming monitor with HDR10+ Gaming

Still, Samsung is currently the only brand to have announced support for 'HDR10+ Gaming', which is an extra set of features (VRR, 4K 120Hz, automated HDR calibration etc.) on top of standard HDR10+. HDR10+ Gaming is supported in Samsung TVs and gaming monitors with 120Hz panels from 2022 and later. Also read: Samsung introduces HDR10+ Gaming with VRR, HDR auto-calibration

Only PC right now

As such, you will need a PC with a compatible GPU such as Nvidia's RTX 20/30, which added HDR10+ Gaming support via firmware, and a recent Samsung TV or gaming monitor. And of course the game. It is a start but HDR10+ still has a very long way to go in gaming. The open beta test of The First Descendant will begin on September 19 in all countries except China.
