LG launches inexpensive smart monitors with webOS 23, AirPlay 2

23 Oct 2023 | Rasmus Larsen |

LG has followed Samsung into the market for smart monitors; PC monitors with a built-in TV platform for apps and features such as Apple AirPlay 2 and HomeKit.

Samsung was the first brand to launch a smart monitor in 2020 built on its own Tizen platform. LG followed in late 2022 with webOS-based smart monitors.

LG is now adding two inexpensive smart monitors to its line-up with the 32-inch 32SR53FS and the 27-inch 27SR50F.

IPS LCD with Full HD

Neither of the two new monitors set new standards in any way. They are basic, low-contrast IPS LCD displays with Full HD (1920x1080) resolution. There are built-in 2x 5W speakers. However, they are now powered by webOS 23 instead of webOS 22 in the existing model. LG's webOS 23 offers a redesigned user interface and popular apps such as Apple TV, Disney+ and Netflix. Both monitors feature Apple AirPlay 2 and HomeKit.

Smart monitors should not been be seen as professional monitors intended for graphics or video editing, and they are not optimized for gaming either, but be seen as all-round PC monitors that can double as small TV screens with streaming capabilities. And apps such as Microsoft 365 let you use them for certain desktop tasks without a PC. LG's 32-inch 32SR53FS and 27-inch 27SR50F will be available soon starting in the US for $200 and $230, respectively.
