Samsung announces $4000 98" DU9000 4K LCD TV

16 Apr 2024 | Rasmus Larsen |

Samsung is expanding its lineup of 98-inch LCD TVs with the addition of the more affordable DU9000 model, which features a 120Hz panel and HDMI 2.1 ports..

Like TCL, Samsung plans to significantly expand its range of 98-inch TVs this year with the introduction of the 98-inch QN90D and the 98-inch DU9000. Last year's QN990C (8K LCD) and Q80C (4K LCD) will carry over into 2024.

- "Just a few years ago, 65" TVs were considered 'big'. Today, people want even bigger screens. In fact, the number of 98" TVs sold across the industry has grown nearly 15 times since last year," said James Fishler, SVP of Home Entertainment, Samsung Electronics America.

All 98-inch LCD panels are currently produced by TCL CSOT, meaning that all 98-inch Samsung TVs employ a TCL panel, although typically with Samsung's own LED backlight module. Samsung Display no longer produces LCD panels of any kind.

4K, 120Hz and HDMI 2.1

DU9000 does not feature miniLED zone dimming like the 98-inch QN90D, but it still comes with some of the company's high-end features, including three HDMI 2.1 ports with 4K120 and VRR support for gaming, enabled by a 120Hz panel. It comes with the latest version of the Tizen operating system built-in including the Gaming Hub with access to cloud gaming apps such as Xbox and Nvidia GeForce Now.

Samsung recommends a viewing distance of 6 to 12 feet for a 98-inch screen, making it "perfect for medium-to-large living rooms and open layout homes." The 98-inch Samsung UN98DU9000 has been confirmed for the US, where it will be available soon for $4000 at launch, making it more expensive than TCL's entry-level 98-inch S5 that is currently available for around $2700 and TCL's step-up 98-inch R754, available for $3700. Increased competition in the 98-inch segment has already brought prices down significantly but prices could potentially fall further in the coming years as more TV brands enter the field. Both LG and Hisense have announced 98-inch 4K LCD TVs for 2024.
