Sony says that inflation and currency trends have forced it to increase the price of both PlayStation 5 consoles in Europe, Canada, Australia, China, Japan, and Mexico, but not the US.

PlayStation 5 was launched in November 2020 for €400 / £450 and €500 / £450 in Europe and the UK for the Digital and Disc editions, respectively. The price is going up €50 / £30 in Europe and will similarly increase in other regions of the world.

There will not be any price adjustments in the US, said Sony.

The adjustment comes just as the supply situation for both PS5 and Xbox Series was starting to improve somewhat. The key question now is whether Microsoft follows suit or decides to keep prices unchanged to lure more customers to the Xbox ecosystem

Sony attributed its decision to the high global inflation and currency trends due to the ongoing supply crisis situation. 

- "The global economic environment is a challenge that many of you around the world are no doubt experiencing. We’re seeing high global inflation rates, as well as adverse currency trends, impacting consumers and creating pressure on many industries. Based on these challenging economic conditions, SIE has made the difficult decision to increase the recommended retail price (RRP) of PlayStation 5 in select markets across Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA), Asia-Pacific (APAC), Latin America (LATAM), as well as Canada. There will be no price increase in the United States", announced Sony.

The company added that its top priority is to improve the PlayStation 5 supply situation
