CeBIT 2006 part 2

Here’s part 2 of Flatpanels’ CeBit 2006 fair coverage with a lot of new LG products. You’ll find part 1 here: CeBIT 2006 part 1 

In part 2, I’ll look at the booths of LG, Sharp, Hitachi, Toshiba, BenQ and Eizo. Let’s start off with a look at Sharp. 

Sharp
Sharp had a lot of new technologies that are not yet ready for the consumer market. Some of them were quite interesting, however.

The first one I saw was this two-way panel from Sharp. The idea is that you see two different images; one from the left and one from the right. 

I was quite surprised by the prototype. I had expected it to be rubbish but it was very convincing. If you look at the panel from the front, however, you’ll see a mix of the two different images.

The lines in the first picture are from my camera. These two pictures were shown simultaneously and it was a very nice presentation. The panel has potential to be integrated into for example cars.

Sharp also had a 1920x1080 DLP projector. It was hard to catch a picture, however.

Two TVs from the AQUOS series. They looked very nice.

Sharp also had a remarkable LCD-TV. The TV was 65 inches and the largest LCD-TV to date. It had a resolution of 1920x1080.

LG
We went on to see the LG booth which was very impressive. When we arrived LG had arranged a large show (just for us ;-) ) with an outstanding TV setup.

Panasonic introduced a 103 inch plasma TV on CeBit. Before Panasonic snatched the title, LG held the record with their 102 inch plasma TV. You can see it below.

LG also presented a 60 inch PDP-TV - impressive.

We moved on to see LG’s PC monitors and there’s a lot to tell.

LG had a design experiment prepared for CeBit with monitors made in all kinds of different materials.

One of the strangest ones was this stone version. I don’t think it suits the traditional office desk, however.

After the strange looking monitors I found LG’s new L1900 series. The L1900 models have a very nice and novel design. Three different types were introduced; Eclipse, Ring and Jar.

The picture characteristics remind me of the new L1770H and L1970H which I’ll soon review. This includes a contrast ratio of 1600:1. See this picture for more information.

LG also showed a new 20 inch widescreen monitor called L203WT. It has HDCP support and a contrast ratio of 1400:1.

LG had some small-size OLED panels too. I didn’t find any larger prototypes and no SED either because Canon didn’t attend the CeBit and Toshiba in a very strange decision had decided not to show the SED to the world.
Samsung have a 40 inch OLED-TV prototype but unfortunately it wasn’t anywhere to be seen.

Hitachi
Hitachi had a few new TVs to show us. Nothing too exciting, however.

Toshiba

Toshiba are ready to introduce a Full HD (1920x1080) TV soon. You see a picture of the beast below here and I must say that the picture was nice.

Eizo

I never found an Eizo booth but I found some of their new products at another location. Eizo are known for the graphics monitors and especially the ColorEdge models. The ColorEdge screens are some of the best monitors for working with graphics and pictures on the market.

I tried to open our own test software, monitorTest but no Internet connection was active.

Large players such as Pioneer, Sony and Philips didn’t attend CeBit and that’s why there’s nothing to report. We’ll hope to see some of their new products on future fairs.
