Japan Display reveals 2.3" LCD with 1280x800 pixels

Display manufacturers are competing to create the most detailed displays. Japan Display – created by Sony, Toshiba and Hitachi – now push the market to new heights with their 2.3-inch screen that holds 1280x800 pixels – or 651 ppi.

Twice as detailed as the iPhone

In the last few years we have seen some incredible displays with resolutions so high that they exceed the human eye’s ability to distinguish details (from a typical viewing distance). The iPhone 4 kicked of the resolution race and we have recently witnessed Full HD resolution in 5 inches and 4K resolution in a 13.5-inch screen.

Japan Display, recently formed by Sony, Toshiba and Hitachi, takes pixel density to the next level. The screen is only 2.3 inches large but has an impressive resolution of 1280x800 pixels. This corresponds to 651ppi (pixel per inch) density; twice the pixel density in the iPhone 4 and 4S.

You can practically hold the screen right in front of your eye and still not distinguish pixels. And even though 651 ppi is overkill for 2D viewing, other technologies such as glasses-free 3D can benefit.
