FlatpanelsHD was invited to see LG Display’s OLED technology of tomorrow. Highlights included a 65” rollable OLED display and the first 8K OLED TV panel.
65” rollable OLED TV
LG Electronics unveiled a range of new OLED TVs at CES while LG Display focused on the display technology of tomorrow inside its invitation-only booth.
One highlight inside was a 65” OLED display that is rollable, meaning that it can roll-up and disappear into the base. It takes a little over 10 seconds to roll out completely during which you can hear a small motor work. Picture quality is exactly as good as you would expect from a 4K OLED. In other words; it appears that nothing is lost.
We asked LG Display if it is possible to roll out the panel partially when viewing non-16:9 video. This is indeed possible, we were told. We were also told that the base can be flipped and mounted to the ceiling.
We must again stress that this is a technology demonstration and not an actual product.
88” 8K OLED
LG Display also showcaed the world’s first 8K OLED display that increases the maximum size from the current OLED TV panel limit of 77” to 88”.
LG Display emphasized that despite the screen being so large it is still extremely slim and elegant. Even at 8K resolution that offers 4 times as many pixels as 4K resolution OLED remains almost paper-thin. The picture was very impressive and crisp, even from a few centimeters away. The display also appeared to maintain brightness levels despite having 4 times the pixels.
The company declined to comment on its plans for 8K OLED mass production but at least we now know that it is possible. Industry observers had questioned whether OLED could make the jump to 8K resolution due to technical limits
Besides these two prototypes, LG Display showcased a ’Crystal Sound OLED’ with 3.0 audio that uses the actual OLED panel as a speaker membrane, a ’wallpaper’ OLED and a large video wall where OLED panels overlap in order to make the seams less visible (but still visible).
