Google has announced its alternative to Apple’s Airplay; Chromecast. Chromecast looks interesting and is cross-platform, but in other ways it is also more limited than Airplay. In the sheet below we have compared the two streaming technologies.
Chromecast vs. Airplay: which is best?
In the past, Google has tried with DLNA, WiFi Direct, the Nexus Q, and recently Google put its faith into Miracast. Nothing has really worked and we are largely unimpressed by how Miracast has been implemented in TVs – and Google seems to feel the same way. Chromecast could change that. Google’s Chromecast is really cheap and cross-platform. It sounds promising and after 3 years, Google finally has something that could challenge Airplay.
Right now, Chromecast is only supported by very few apps, including Netflix, YouTube, and Google Play Movies & TV, and Google Play Music. Google says that Pandora support is coming soon. That list far from matches Airplay, which is supported by most apps (and can be used in almost un-supported apps with Airplay Mirroring). But Airplay has also been out for a while so it obviously has a head start.
