CES 2009: Samsung exhibits 6.5 mm LCD-TV

13 Jan 2009 | Rasmus Larsen |

Don't miss anything from CES 2009. See our huge CES 2009 section.

Samsung exhibits the thinnest LCD-TV prototype in the world at CES 2009. It’s a 6.5 mm thin LCD-TV prototype that has a LED backlight.

Samsung haven’t told us much about the prototype but we know that it’s the thinnest TV exhibited so far. It beats JVC’s 7 mm LCD-TV also exhibited at CES 2009 as well as Philips’ 8 mm LCD-TV prototype exhibited at IFA 2008 in Berlin.

The prototype has a depth of just 6.5 mm thanks to a LED backlight with LED positioned at the two sides of the panel. The light is distributed across the panel by light diffusers.

The TV is not as thin as OLED, though. Sony’s 11-inch OLED-TV, XEL-1, is just 3 mm thick.

Samsung has not yet planned to launch this superslim LCD-TV. Sony has a 9.9 mm LCD-TV called the ZX1 series available on the market now.
