In the wake of Pioneer's exit from the plasma and the television industry, LG might drop their production of plasma TVs. It’s the Japanese newspaper Kyodo News that has reported the LG exit after interviewing LG’s vice-president, Lee Gyo-Hong.
LG’s vice-president, Lee Gyu-Hong, has stated that in because of the global economic slowdown LG is compelled to evaluate some product segments and the plasma segment may turn out to be unprofitable unless we see an economical upturn again soon.
Lee elaborates and says that the reason is strictly economic; the quality of the TVs has been improved considerably in recent LG plasma-TVs and especially the PG series has been successful. But LCD-TVs have in the recent years become cheaper to mass produce - especially in large panels.
LG’s soon-to-come PS8000 series may never be released
Panasonic, the largest plasma manufacturer, is still going strong, however. Panasonic remains dedicated and has been able to lower production costs substantially in the recent years.
Hitachi, NEC and Pioneer have already planned to phase out their production of plasma TVs. So far nothing is official regarding LG’s plasma screens.
New TVs, for example the PS8000, have already been announced on CES 2009, and at the moment we keep the finger on the pulse and tell you more when we know something.
