Sony has been engaged in development of their FED technology for years now. FED is a counterpart to the scandal-ridden SED technology from Canon and Toshiba but Sony has now decided to close down their FED research. It looks like Sony will bet on the very promising OLED technology instead.
FED uses phosphor to generate a picture – just like our old tube-TVs, SED and plasma. Small electron emitters are located behind each sub pixel. When voltage is applied electrons are emitted and luminescence occurs when these electrons strike the phosphor layer on the front.
FED is dead, but the shiny jackets never die
Sony has announced that FED is dead, however. SED looks dead as well and this looks like the end of new phosphor-based technologies with plasma probably being the last fighter.
OLED is promising, however. Sony has already released their first 11” XEL-1 OLED-TV and presented some interesting demo units. Look at this OLED from Sony in the video below. We shot the video on IFA 2008 back in September 2008.
