Apple LED monitors imitated by Collins America

06 May 2009 | Rasmus Larsen |

If you’re crazy about Apple design but not crazy about the premium price on their monitors you might take a look at these Collins America CinemaView monitors. The range – designed for Mac users – features 3 new models.

Collins America has taken a bold step into the Mac world trying to challenge mighty Apple. The new range of “CinemaView” monitors comes in 19, 20 and 24-inches; all with the mini Displayport input.
The three monitors have resolutions of 1440x900, 1680x1050 and 1920x1080.

The design, brand name (CinemaView) and interface options are similar to those on the real Apple CinemaDisplay monitors but the price is the big difference. But obviously something is missing with a price tag of $899 USD on the Apple LED CinemaDisplay and a $499 USD price tag on the Collins America.

First of all you will lose the LED backlight but even more important; the nice H-IPS panel. The CinemaView monitors all use the cheap TN panels characterized by lower colour depth, bad viewing angles and inferior image quality in general.

The models still feature the aluminum frame and stand, though. Tilt adjustment is integrated and glossy glass front screen cover is also found on the CinemaView monitors. The monitors also have a 3-port USB hub.
