LG wants to expand 8G LCD production

25 Mar 2010 | Rasmus Larsen |

According to Digitimes, LG Display intends to invest 1.5 trillion Won which is about 1.3 billion USD in a new 8. generation (8G) LCD production line. The new 8G line will be focusing on manufacturing 32-55-inch LCD-TV panels.

Third 8G LCD line from LG

If LG chooses to start production of the new 8G LCD production line it will be the third 8G LCD line from LG Display. The first P8 and the second P8E are running now and operate with glass substrates of 2,200 x 2,500 millimeters that can be cut into smaller LCD panels.

The new LCD line will be called P8E+ and should be able to process 68000 glass substrates each month. From a 8G substrate LG can cut for example eight 46-inch LCD panels.

Mass production will be up and running in the first half of 2011. The second line, P8E, will also ramp up capacity in 2010.

The investment will make LG stronger in the LCD business that is still growing rapidly. P8E+ will be located in the Paju Display Cluster like the two other 8G LCD lines.

Analysts at DisplaySearch say that LCD figures will increase from 160 million panels in 2009 to around 184 or 204 million within the next two years.

Sharp is currently planning a 10G LCD plant.
